In an Instant Everything Changed - Words from Founder Courtney Holmes
In an instant—everything changed.
My Dad used to tell me about how the camera I had could shoot video and I should really use that feature. I brushed it off because sure, it could shoot video, but once I shot that video what would I do with it? Cue endless hours of searching through boring YouTube tutorials to teach myself how to use Premiere Pro. I don't know what it was about the year 2013, but all the tutorials online at the time were using footage of cars, or dogs, or weddings. What's up with that?
I decided that if I was going to get serious about editing the footage I was shooting with my camera, I needed to film something really important and meaningful to me.
So I put my daughter in the kitchen sink, switched my camera to video, and filmed some of the most basic and technically flawed footage that I have. Then I found the most beautiful song that I could find, opened up Premiere Pro, and just figured it out.
That's the moment everything changed. I felt an unshakeable feeling in my very core, that I had to create films for other parents. And that's where it all began for me. This wasn't an option, this was a calling.
I had no idea, in that moment, that my life would change forever. Or even more shockingly, just how much it would change…
Since that day I've created more than 75 films for other families or businesses, and my business has never been stronger. I usually book out a year in advance, and I’ve found a wonderful niche for myself creating meaningful films that bring people so much joy. I love what I do, and I’m so thankful to have created a full time business doing it.
If you’ve been on the fence about learning video for fear of not being good enough or not having time, let me tell you something that I wish I’d known when I first started.
The footage you’ll take right now will be priceless in years to come no matter how unsteady or out of focus it might be.
Any footage you shoot for your family, is worth the effort. It doesn’t have to be complicated, or perfect. Perfect doesn’t exist anyway. And it doesn’t have to consume all of your time.
You can start out just making short 1 min films, there is nothing to say you have to shoot and edit for hours. All you need are maybe 10-20 clips to get you started. And if the logistics of HOW to do it are holding you back, I can help you with that.
Join the FilmingLife® Academy today and get immediate access to a beginners course created just for photographers like you. And don’t worry, it’s not the kind of course that sends you content without also being there for support. I’ve built a dedicated community of filmmakers called the FilmingLife® Network for the Academy that I check into on a regular basis. I won’t leave you high and dry after four weeks either, you receive ongoing support from me and all the other educators for as long as you like.
This truly is a program like no other. Have I peaked your interest?
