SHOWCASE: "Avant Garde" Film Projects | FilmingLife® ArtHouse
AVANT GARDE: a French term that describes highly experimental modern musical styles
The September/October theme for our ArtHouse Film Project was led by FilmingLifer Lindsey DeCicco and was all about AVANT GARDE music.
It’s very easy as filmmakers, and specifically family filmmakers to get stuck in a rut of similar music choices and styles for our films. Lindsey challenged our members to try and think outside the box when it came to the types & styles of music they use for their films, but also in how they use music in their film and incorporating more than one piece of music in their work.
This really pushed our members but I think you’ll agree, the results were well worth it!
All ArtHouse themes are broken in to 2 levels. For the AVANT GARDE theme the levels were defined as follows -
For Level One AVANT GARDE films we asked our members to create an entire film that uses a song unlike anything they would normally use.
For Level Two AVANT GARDE films we asked members to create a film melding parts of two songs, at least one of which is something you would not normally use.
As always the films that were submitted & created by our members were just amazing, and we’re so pleased to present them to you today…
The Educator’s Choice Award has been chosen by the Lead Educator of the film project AVANT GARDE, Lindsey DeCicco, as those that fully embody the spirit of the FilmingLife® ArtHouse, and are noted for their storytelling, creativity and unique interpretation of the theme.
Krista Hall
What Lindsey said about Krista’s film -
”Krista chose a song she would probably never pick for this ArtHouse project, and it worked so well as the soundtrack beneath her October highlight film. Krista’s last few films have shown tremendous growth overall. She has really made that leap from “learner” to “maker” in my opinion. I love how this music choice highlights a humor in her family that I haven’t really seen much of yet in her other films. The silliness of boys, their dancing and their play mixed with his song was such a fun vibe. I know the boys will watch this one on repeat! This film made me smile so big. Congrats Krista!”

Leah Lopez
“Leah’s adorable Halloween story brought a huge smile to my face. Her collaboration with her kids as little actors and actresses must have been so fun to work on. These kids will love watching this film forever. Leah really impressed me with her use of not 1, not 2, but 3 songs! I love that each character in her story had its own theme music, yet all the songs fit so well together. She really stretched herself here with our ArtHouse theme and I have to give her an honorable mention!”

Amy Murgatroyd
“This brand film of Amy’s makes me want to head straight to Pilates. This choice of music is not what we see from Amy’s sentimental family films, so it was great to see something so different. You can tell her edit was directly influenced by this song choice. I loved how the song gave her the freedom to stretch in other areas as well, especially in transitions and camera movement. So good!”
