#6filmchallenge | Motherhood

Our #6filmchallenge for May and June focused on the theme of “Motherhood”. This was a beautifully broad theme, full of potential for soul searching and self-expression. Our members, as usual, took our breath away with their unique interpretations of this theme.

In particular, we saw a thread of honesty and deeply raw beauty in these submissions. A choice of 'real' over 'perfection'. From birth stories, to using old phone video footage, to love letters to self-portraits... these heartfelt creations left us with tear-stained faces.

Take a moment to dive into these films, we hope they both inspire you but also show that documenting Motherhood doesn't have to be complicated to be heartfelt. We truly believe that the love that goes into crafting the films that you see below is felt in a big way by the children and families that get to cherish these memories in the years to come.

“We are in love with how Nicole combines footage of her labour & those first moments with her new baby in this beautiful Motherhood film. So many memories bottled up in such a heartfelt edit.”

What Nicole said about her film…

“Motherhood has been the biggest transformation of my life. It seemed like such an epic theme for me and at first I imagined trying to create an epic film to match. But times are trying right now and I realized that the simple newborn film I was able to create with my third (and last baby) is also exactly what motherhood is to me. Imperfect, unpredictable, loud, and a little absurd. It captures the sweet moments I knew to expect and the bonus ones no one can prepare you for.”

STAFF PICK
Katrina Keenan

“This tender Motherhood film by Katrina stood out to us as a unique and artistic approach to our theme. Katrina chose to create a tone poem featuring her daughter's voice. The light, the scene and the edit truly draw you into the words in such a beautiful way. ”

What Katrina said about her film…

“For this theme, I decided to incorporate motherhood through the eyes of a child using a lovely poem written from a child’s view called ‘Hold my Hand, Mummy’. One of my children is seen in this film reciting the poem. (The source is listed in the credits).”

“Films don't have to be complicated to be heartfelt, and this Motherhood film by Sarah really shows this in such a simple way. Only one scene, but filled with so much love... a perfect way to show her child how much she cares.”

What Sarah said about her film…

“I hardly ever create self portraits and I’ve been wanting to get in the frame for a film. I think the best part about working on this was watching my son’s reaction to the finished film. This film means so much to me because I don’t know how much longer my son Lucas will run into our bed each morning for morning cuddles. It’s my favorite part of the day, waking up to Lucas climbing into our bed, and I wanted to capture the simplicity of our mornings. ❤️”

“A tribute to my beautiful mother, on the first Mother's Day without her, and a thank you to my beautiful daughter, for making me a mom.” - Michelle

Jonah 8 Months Sitting from Lindsey DeCicco on Vimeo.

Jonah is 8 months old and mastering the sit. With this film, I wanted to document our pre-nap play time and wind down routine. Everything changes so quickly with a baby. These precious moments, when he can sit (but not get away!) and be settled in my arms are something I hope imprints on this mom's heart.

Cecilia Birth Story - June 6 2020 from Candice Tkachuk on Vimeo.

An incredible home birth that was peaceful and powerful; watch as this amazing mama brings a beautiful baby girl into the world with the help of her husband and her midwife team.

What Jill said about her film…

“This film is part of a project I started to document my days as a mother of a young toddler that incorporates my iPhone and Sony footage along with a narration of how my week has unfolded from my point of view. So far I've found that this project has helped me to be appreciate how quickly my baby is growing and to feel confident that I've documented this season in a way that is honest and meaningful.”

What is the #6filmchallenge?

We loved the idea of inspiring our members to go out and create work around a theme every two months throughout the year, so we divided the year into 6 unique themes.

Our hope is that members will be inspired to create unique, personal films that are their own interpretations of each theme. So far, we haven’t been disappointed!

These are the #6filmchallenge themes for 2020:
