#6filmchallenge | "Day in the Life" Vertical Video

Day in the Life Vertical.jpg

In March and April, our #6filmchallenge to our Academy members was to create a 'Day-In-The-Life' (DITL) Film; a film that focuses on the everyday moments of their daily lives. To up the challenge, we asked each participant to film in a VERTICAL orientation, flipping their camera away from the standard horizontal orientation. For many, this was a new skill both in shooting and in editing! Some chose to use their DSLR cameras, some chose to use their mobile devices, and some combined both devices to create their film.

When we announced this challenge early in 2020 we had no idea that during the months of March and April, the majority of our members would find themselves under some kind of Stay-at-Home lockdown during the worldwide Covid-19 Pandemic.

What struck us most about these creations was the incredible change that has come into many of our homes during this pandemic. From adventures in homeschooling, to the news reports playing in the background, to what it really felt like to live in this unprecedented time in history, our members have captured the joys, the hardships, and the many small yet important moments that have come to be our new reality in living through a historic, worldwide event. We couldn't be more proud of each of these members and these unique looks into their lives.

Six Months - Happy Mother’s Day from Nicole Yandon on Vimeo.

The days are long, but the weeks and months are short when you have a newborn. Before you know it, your baby is 6 months. As a Filmmaker and Photographer, you can’t pick up your camera enough to document this fleeting, precious time in your baby’s life. Many times I’m too sleep deprived or flustered as a mom of two to do it, and sadly I miss the opportunity to capture those moments on my DSLR. But thankfully we all have this little device we carry daily that is able to document what I missed with my big camera along with all the tiny in between moments. When you think of it, our phones carry some of the most important moments in your life as a Mama. Thank goodness we have this tool available so nothing gets missed. Cheers to mobile filmmaking!

Here’s a very intimate glimpse into my world, from iPhone to yours, with love. Happy Mother’s Day.

Tkachuk Day in the Life - Apr 22 2020 from Candice Tkachuk on Vimeo.

This film was created as part of the #6filmchallenge in the Filming Life Academy. The theme for May was "Day in the Life" and we were challenged to film it in portrait rather than landscape orientation. This is my family, and how we spent a typical day at home during this very unique time of a worldwide pandemic that we're all experiencing together.

What is the #6filmchallenge?

We loved the idea of inspiring our members to go out and create work around a theme every two months throughout the year, so we divided the year into 6 unique themes.

Our hope is that members will be inspired to create unique, personal films that are their own interpretations of each theme. So far, we haven’t been disappointed!

These are the #6filmchallenge themes for 2020:
