SHOWCASE: "Water" | FilmingLife® ArtHouse
"Water is powerful. It can wash away earth, put out fire, and even destroy iron. Water can carve its way through stone. And when trapped, water makes a new path."
The May/June ArtHouse Film Project theme was led by Courtney Holmes and was centered around the theme WATER.
Courtney challenged our members to try and incorporate Water in their films and use it to enhance the mood, atmosphere, depth movement or as element to their artistic voice.
Members were encouraged to think outside the box and use water in a way that hadn’t before.
The theme was broken down into two levels:
Level One: Create a film that includes elements of water.
Level Two: Create a film that includes footage from both under and over water, where water is the main character of the film.
We are so impressed with the creativity and attention to detail our members have infused into their films and we’re. soexcited. topresent this showcase for you today…
The Educator’s Choice Awards have been chosen by the Lead Educator of the film project WATER, Courtney Holmes, as those that fully embody the spirit of the FilmingLife® ArtHouse, and are noted for their storytelling, creativity and unique interpretation of the theme.
Ashley Lewis | @lewispartyof_4
What COurtney said about Ashley’s film -
”This film from Ashley Lewis is a great example of how a simple idea, executed well, can be so impactful to the viewer. The length of the film was just right, and the song choice was brilliant. Ashley takes us into a child's mind and evokes in us the feelings of childhood anticipation with absolute perfection. Her musicality, pacing, and use of colour conveys a sense of nostalgia in the most human and innocent of ways. Her use of water as a significant environmental element in the film was perfectly executed.”

Melissa Hines
What Courtney said about Melissa’s film -
”Melissa Hines uses water as the main character in her film, in the most creative and story-driven way that really takes us as the viewer on a journey across several generations. The pacing and sound design of this film is so well done that the quality of the voice-over is easily forgiven. Which is just an example of how a well executed story wins over the best audio equipment any day. The story arc that Melissa has created is layered and full of meaning with so many moments of humour along the way, paired with breath taking footage and well timed moments that keep us engaged and interested. A visual delight, that looks so effortless yet would have taken hours to perfect.”

Alyse Gonyea | @alysemariephotoandfilms
What Courtney said about Alyse’s film -
”Alyse takes us on a visual journey using water as the main character of this film and demonstrates how the right song choice can make a significant impact to how the viewer feels watching the footage. At the start of the film we get introduced to water in a wider, more surface level way, but as the film goes on she starts to show us life inside the water pulling back the layers of what we see from above the water to show us a deeper, more intimate perspective of life beneath the water. Then towards the end we are introduced to another layer of significance within these waters. A well put together, well executed film by Alyse.”
